The Church’s mandate is to proclaim the everlasting Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ (Matthew 28:18 – 20; Acts 1:8) in the context of the Three Angels Messages (Revelation 14:6 – 12). In order to fulfill its mandate and effectively reach the world, the Seventh-day Adventist Church employs media ministry as a cutting edge to support its mission, its message, and the life of its people with an aim of connecting and pointing all to Jesus Christ, the wonderful Savior of the world (John 12:32; Matthew 5:16).
Mass media plays a huge part in people’s lives. The power of mass media has become so strong that its undoubtedly significant role is beyond any question (Bartleby, 2016). There is no doubt that media in all its forms has gained wider acceptability and usability and the most important tool of communication around the world. Churches are investing time and money on broadcast media such as television and radio as well as social media platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp and YouTube
Media Ministry has contributed positively towards the establishment and growth of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. On October 22, 1844 about 100 000 people anticipated the Second Coming of Jesus Christ but it did not happen as expected. This became what is known as the Great Disappointment. Many were discouraged and abandoned the faith but some continued studying the Scripture and subsequently discovered that the date was correct but the event was wrong. They remained faithful, studying the Word of God, praying and through the power of the Holy Spirit developed into the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Before the Church had a name or organization, God through these Adventist pioneers established a print media. Ellen G. White in one of her earliest writings said, “After coming out of a vision, I said to my husband: You must begin to print a little paper and send it out to the people” (Life Sketches of Ellen White page 125). They published their finding on paper; spread the message by word of mouth, door-to-door and by traveling to many different areas. Thus the press and publications were the first forms of media used the Adventist pioneers. Today the Church celebrates a strong publishing ministry with over 60 publishing houses established around the world. It has also developed other media platforms such as broadcasting (Adventist News Network, Hope Channel) and Social media.
Throughout Church’s history media has been the means for delivering the message. From verbal storytelling to printed materials and broadcasting – media has been used to communicate. Recent statistics show that over 70% of the world population is using media platforms to communicate; they read books and magazines, watch televisions, listen to radios, searching on internet, interacting on social media and calling as well as texting using mobile devices. Ellen White in Ministry of Healing page 143 wrote, “Christ's method alone will give true success in reaching the people. The Savior mingled with men as one who desired their good. He showed His sympathy for them, ministered to their needs, and won their confidence. Then He bade them, "Follow Me."” If we are to win people to Christ we must be where they are and media ministry is one means to take us there.
